ESEnfC maintains its position as the 4th most innovative Portuguese polytechnic institution

The Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) maintains its fourth place in the ranking of the most innovative Portuguese polytechnic higher education institutions, according to the new evaluation conducted by the Consumer Guidance Institute Portugal. The assessment process considered the number of patents registered by institutions worldwide between January 2020 and June 2021.

This time, the time interval of analysis was shorter than the 2020 assessment, which then took into account patents registered between 2017 and 2019 (three years).

Organized into four main categories - Private Companies, Universities, Polytechnic Institutions, and Non-Profit Organizations - this ranking aims to recognize and praise Portugal’s R&D (research and development) sector.

The Consumer Guidance Institute Portugal website clarifies that “to determine which organizations were the most innovative, we used the same methodology as in 2020, analyzing the number of patent applications (and registrations) made by national companies internationally. We focused exclusively on patents, the “purest” form of innovation. To be able to register a patent, it is necessary to prove its uniqueness and originality. When a patent application is submitted, it is examined. Then it is decided whether the innovation is worthy of being registered as a patent and its holder of receiving exclusive rights.”

The Consumer Guidance Institute Portugal, part of the Consumer Guidance Group, existing in Europe for a decade, has created the Prémio Líderes Inovação Portugueses (Portuguese Innovation Leaders Award).

More information on this ranking, led by the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra in the Polytechnic Institution category, is available at https://www.cgip.pt/awards/lideres-inovacao-portugueses-2022/.

Fourth place also in the INPI statistical report

In the first semester of 2021, the ESEnfC was considered the 4th higher education institution in Portugal with the highest number of invention applications (6), as the first applicant, at the Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

According to the INPI “Statistics on Inventions, Design, Trademarks, and OSDC” report for that period, the ESEnfC appears on the list right after the Universities of Minho and Porto and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.

According to the same statistical report published online, the ESEnfC is also in 8th place in the global top of applicants (as the 1st applicant) with the highest number of requests for national inventions. Or 6th place, when considering that each of the three organizations that precede the ESEnfC in this ranking (which also includes independent inventors, legal entities, and research institutions, apart from higher education institutions) submitted seven invention requests.

A body of the Ministry of Justice (in coordination with the Ministry of State, Economy and Digital Transition and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education), the INPI aims to promote innovation and Portugal’s competitiveness and fight against counterfeiting and unfair competition in the area of industrial property.

INPI registers and protects industrial property rights on trademarks, patents, and designs.
