Professor Luís Miguel Nunes de Oliveira completed his doctoral program on Novos Contextos de Intervenção Psicológica em Educação, Saúde e Qualidade de Vida (New Contexts of Psychological Intervention in Education, Health and Quality of Life), being awarded with summa cum laude (distinction with the greatest honor) from the University of Extremadura (Badajoz). His doctoral thesis was entitled Tradução e validação para a cultura portuguesa da 'Nurse Competence Scale' – um estudo em hospitais portugueses (Translation and validation of the Nurse Competence Scale for the Portuguese Culture – a study in Portuguese hospitals).
In addition to the translation, adaptation and validation of this scale, the study focused on analyzing the level of professional skills of the Portuguese nurses, based on a sample of 1164 nurses working in mainland Portugal and in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and Madeira, as well as on identifying areas of professional development and training needs.
«We found that the nurses assess their professional skills at high levels of competence, that gender is a differentiated variable within some dimensions of competence, and that age, specialized training in nursing, the length of professional experience, the workplace and the geographical area influence the nurses’ level of professional skills», explained the faculty member of the ESEnfC in the abstract of his doctoral thesis.
The thesis of Professor Luís Miguel Nunes de Oliveira was supervised by Professors Florêncio Vicente Castro and Paulo Joaquim Pina Queirós.
