The project “Before you get Burned” is back on the streets of Coimbra due to the academic festivities. This project is carried out by the Workshop on Expressivity of the Student Association of the Nursing School of Coimbra in collaboration with more than 13 institutions and it aims to prevent alcohol abuse and promote fun without risks in Queima das Fitas (academic festivities).
Dozens of students of the ESEnfC participate in this initiative which includes individual counselling (by a group of peer educators), the evaluation of the alcohol level of people attending the academic festivities, the distribution of condoms and information on the correct use of this contraceptive method.
In case of intoxication, “street” educators – young people who educate other young people – may also refer students to obtain the adequate assistance and provide basic care.
In parallel, a mobile health unit was also provided and it is located in Coimbra’s downtown. This unit supports and provides counselling to students, thus promoting sexual protection and road safety.
The partners of the project “Before you get Burned” this year are: the ESEnfC, Student Association of the ESEfC, the Civil Government of Coimbra, the Central Commission of Queima das Fitas 2009, the Regional Health Administration – Centre, the Drugs and Drug Addiction Institute, the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), the Student’s Department of the AAC, the Portuguese Youth Institute, the SOS-Student phone line, Saúde em Português, the Family Planning Association, the Association Existências and the Channel UP.
