Half a thousand people enrolled in the Medical-Surgical Nursing Days

From 4th to 6th March, the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) will organise the Medical-Surgical Nursing Days under the theme “Taking Care of the Person in Critical Condition: from Assessment to Specialised Intervention”.

During three days, about half a thousand nurses – based on the number of enrolments – will discuss, change experiences and knowledge and share the advances in medical-surgical nursing.

Four round-tables will be part of the event which will take place on Campus B of the ESEnfC (in São Martinho do Bispo, next to the Hospital dos Covões): “Taking Care of the Patient in a Critical Condition: Contribution from Intensive Care”, “Implications of the Oncologic Illness to the Patient and the Family”, “The Patient in a Critical Condition in the Emergency Room: from Admission to Discharge, the Continuity of Care” and “The Problematic of the Cardiac Patient”. The organisation also prepared five workshops and three short courses (pre-days events).

The initial conference will take place on Thursday (March 5th) at 9.30 a.m. and will be entitled “Cuidados al paciente crítico basados en la evidencia”, lectured by Professor Maria Ruzafa Martínez from the Escuela Universitaria de Enfermería da Universidad de Murcia (Spain).

Among the speakers, we will have the presence of chief nurses, specialists and graduated, coming from several hospitals from the country; the Chief Nursing Officer from the General-Directorate of Health, nurse Sérgio Gomes; and some teachers from the Scientific-Pedagogical Unit of Medical-Surgical Nursing of the ESEnfC.

The speakers are not all nurses. This is the case of the President of the National Legal Medicine Institute, Professor Duarte Nuno Vieira, the Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Centre of the Coimbra University Hospital and the President of the Portuguese Association of Bioethics, Professor Rui Nunes.

Professor Duarte Nuno Vieira will lecture on “The Preservation of Evidence in an Emergency Context”. Professor Manuel Antunes will talk about “Cardiac Surgery in Portugal: Paths and Resources”. Professor Rui Nunes will analyse the “Ethical Dilemas and Conflicts in Emergency Contexts”.

For the first afternoon are scheduled workshops on “Treatment of Chronic Wounds”, “Operating Room”, “Therapeutic Massage in Relieving Pain”, “Ostomies – Dimensions of Caregiving” and “Communication Strategies with the Patient in a Critical Condition”.

On Wednesday (March 4th), the courses (which will only operate with a minimun of 15 people enrolled) will be the following: Basic Life Support, Difficult Airway and Immediate Life Support.

The Medical-Surgical Nursing Days “Taking Care of the Person in Critical Condition: from Assessment to Specialised Intervention” (see PDF with full programme) are organised by the Scientific-Pedagogical Unit of Medical-Surgical Nursing of the ESEnfC, with the participation of students/nurses from the 2nd Post-Licentiate Specialisation Course in Medcial-Surgical Nursing of the ESEnfC.
