From February 9th to 12th, the Paediatric Life Support Course took place in Campus A of the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC). This course was aimed at the nurses enrolled in the Post-Licentiate Specialisation Course in Child Health and Paediatric Nursing.
In this course, which also had the participation of three nurses from the Paediatric Hospital (external to the post-licentiate course), the students participated in lectures, workshops, practical workbenches for specific competences and in simulations for case study solution.
According to the course organizers, it was a main concern to develop and improve knowledge and necessary competences concerning the identification of illness/trauma situations with potential to threaten the child’s life in the immediate or short term, as well as in the decision-making process leading to the prevention of cardiorespiratory arrest in a child seriously ill and/or victim of a trauma.
Trainees also widened knowledge and competences concerning the reanimation of a child in situation of cardiorespiratory arrest through basic and advanced measures, and the provision of quality post-reanimation care in order to maximise the results and minimize the sequelae.
The course resulted from a partnership between the Project Group of Training, Consultancy and Research in Reanimation and the coordination group of the Post-licentiate Specialisation Course in Child Health and Paediatric Nursing. This partnership consisted of the full-time participation of teachers Dulce Galvão, Jorge Apóstolo, José Carlos Martins, Luís Batalha, Providência Marinheiro, Regina Amado and Rui Baptista in the implementation of this course.
